Reading Week First Day

We started out Read Across America Week with making a poster about reading.  Our principal asked for each class to make a poster celebrating reading with the hope that it will stay up through next year this time. Well here's our result:

I took each students pictures as they read and they each finished the writing frame: Reading is....Because....
I connected the writing to opinions and similes.  We've already discussed writing opinions and have been learning about similes with our current poetry unit.  Some got it and some didn't, but they all wrote about why reading is good.  I printed each picture wallet size and the students rewrote their writing draft into the speech bubble.  The two blanks are for the two that were absent today to finish tomorrow.

Click here to get all of the pages I used, including the Header, Seuss pictures from the3amteacher, the speech bubbles and the writing frame to draft their message.

Tattling Troubles

I think there's really some kind of dark magic that happens at the end of January every year.  Something in the air changes... and so do my students.  We were all getting along pretty good until a few weeks ago.  Then, the tattling bug hit full force.  You all know that specific whine...Mmmrsss. Greeeen?  or TEEEAAACHERRRRR!  which is followed by a most important tattle.  My head was aching and students were getting less and less work done because they were so busy being nosey.  Well, I had to solve this persistent problem.  One of my colleagues suggested that I have the students tell the President.  Light-bulb!! So, that is exactly what I set up.  I set an empty dishwasher tablet container in a basket with a stack of paper slips.  I posted a picture of the U.S. President along with a list of tattling rules.  Voila!  No more tattling to me!  Of course the excitement of this new avenue to tattle was a little disruptive at first as they all ran to "Tell the President", but it is slowly waning and the two or three that really have to tell everything are the only ones who really post any more.  When I get that whine, I just say, "Is this something for the President?"  and they do an about face.  I read through the tattles each Friday and address concerns with the class. They feel like they've been heard and we can discuss ongoing problems as a class and not fifty times throughout the week to everyone individually as they tattle. Here's a FREEBIE of the rules and picture of the President that I posted. I'd love to hear about your tales of tattling in the comments below!

Making Words FREEBIE

In my aforementioned comprehension class, we briefly discussed the importance of increasing vocabulary and word knowledge.  One of the methods we discussed was the activity of "Making Words."  For this activity, students are given several letters and then make as many words as possible.  Then students can sort the words and add words that fit with the pattern of the words they formed using additional letters.  This great book Month-By-Month Phonics for First Gra (Month-By-Month (Scholastic))

contains many suggested letter combinations and a step by step guide to lead students through the activity.  Another way to come up with the letters is to use the letters of any word you choose, put the vowels in alphabetical order followed by the consonants listed in alphabetical order.  For example, you may choose the letters from the word tamale.  You would present the letters like this  a a e l m t.  I think we often do this type of activity with holiday words.  Well, I've put together a set of these making words activities in an easy to use format.  Come get a couple pages FREE in the preview at my TN store here.  The full Making Words Pack can also be found at my TN store.  All items are on sale now through Wednesday!
